OUR LADY OF BAMENDA ABBEY

is a Cistercian monastery founded in 1964 at Mbengwi, near the town of Bamenda in the North West Province of Cameroon, West Africa. Like the many other monasteries of our Order worldwide, we aim at living the purely contemplative ideal of the Rule as interpreted by the Founders of Citeaux and continually brought up-to-date by subsequent General Chapters of the Order. This monastic ideal is described in No. 7 of the decree of the Second Vatican Council on the Renewal of the Religious life as "a Community totally dedicated to contemplation". This implies that we do not engage in missionary or parish work though we run a Guest House where people can come for spiritual retreats or periods of recollection and obtain advice about the Christian prayer-life.

Please explore our website to learn something of our lives as monks in Africa. Our most up-to-date news can usually be found in the BLOGS written by two members of our Community.
