SACMUS Module 1.2 Music of Scotland - TINWHISTLE

CEOL BEAG - DANCES

CEOL BEAG (or "small music") is the Scottish term for Dance Music.

You are expected to recognize and be able to play all of the following dances:

WALTZ - moderate tempo, three beats in a bar

MARCH - moderate tempo, four beats ina bar

STRATHSPEY - like a March but with SCOTCH SNAPS (DURrum rhythms).

REEL - very fast, count TWO in Simple Time (1,2,1,2)

JIG - very fast, count TWO in Compound Time (1 and a 2 and a).

You can hear examples of each on the Listening Page to help you recognize them. This page has the tinwhistle music.

MARCH: Mhairi's Wedding

MARCH: Uist Tramping Song

STRATHSPEY: Comin' Thro' the Rye

STRATHSPEY: Black and Silver

REEL: Rakes of Mallow

REEL: Reel 2

JIG: Cock of the North

ASSESSMENT: while we want you to enjoy playing your whistle, there has to be a Module Assessment in Week 9. You can play any of the above tunes for your assessment - try to choose one in which you are confident but push yourself a little. The easier the tune, the lower the mark available to you even if you play it perfectly. The marks available are given in the chart below. Your playing will be marked out of 10, so a perfect performance of a Task Level 5 piece (Uist Tramping Song) would score 10*5 = 50
